Whats New

Piracy off the coast of Somalia has brought back to the world's naval stage an old flag.
Blue Water Rising Sun
The winds across the straits of seas from Korea to Singapore rise to a westward flow
In the hulks of iron and steel beneath the China seas ghosts stir
to watch the east horizon
Six decades have passed since the last Japanese warship sailed
into harm's way

Six decades since a Japanese mother told a son
he must do his duty
Six decades since the playing of Auld Lang Syne
for naval warriors departing
for unknown destinies

Out of Kure harbor near the shadows of Hiroshima
come the Maritime Self Defense Force ships
Destroyers Sazanami and Samidare with ensigns high
the same flag that flew above
the Imperial Fleet
red disk with sixteen rays on a white field
the rising sun

In the deeps of the seven seas the currents swirl
over the graves of ships and men
who fought under that flag
and who fought against that flag
each in the duty of their time
If the ghosts could speak they would tell you
to be wary of the rising sun

On the shores of Somalia pirate bands look eastward
for new victims of their trade
Each day the new dawn offers them more targets
for their greed and sport
One day soon the ocean dawn will bring them new ships
and sailors of a navy with long traditions
returning to the blue waters of the deep
each determined to do his duty
for the blood red rising sun
